1989 is the fifth studio album by Taylor Swift which released on October 27, 2014 through Big Machine Records. Swift began working on the album in the immediate following the release of her previous album Red (2012). Swift collaborated with Max Martin and Shellback in the two years of song writing.

This album marked the sonic departure from country music of Swift's previous albums, as 1989 contained drum programming, synthesizers, pulsating bass, processed backing vocals, and guitars. It was ranked as #1 album of 2014 by Critics of billboard.[7]

The album has surpassed 5 million sales in U.S. and 10.1 million copies worldwide alone as of 2018. In Billboard 200 number-one albums charts, 1989 spent 2 weeks in the #1 position from November 15 - November 29 2014 and spent another week from December 13 - December 20 2014. It again appeared #1 on January 3, 2015 spending eleven days and spent another time as #1 for 1 week from February 14 - 21 February 2015, totaling six weeks. It became the second best selling album of 2015, following Adele's album 25. The album's 3 singles Shake It Off, Blank Space and Bad Blood reached #1 on US Billboard Hot 100 while other 4 singles reached top 10-20. The album won The Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2016 making Swift the first female artist to win the award twice, for one which she won for Fearless back in 2010.
